Florida Power & Light Company Awards $50,000 STEM Classroom Makeover Grant to Baker County Education Foundation for Mobile Learning Lab

Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) has awarded a $50,000 STEM Classroom Makeover Grant to the Baker County Education Foundation to launch an innovative project titled "Fueling the Future: The Baker County STEM Mobile Learning Lab". Funded by the NextEra Energy Foundation, this grant is part of FPL's initiative to provide transformational learning opportunities for K-12 students in communities by equipping them with advanced technology and resources.

The project will transform a decommissioned school bus into the BC STEM Explorer Bus, a state-of-the-art, interactive mobile laboratory. This "classroom on wheels" will travel between campuses in the district to ensure that all students - regardless of their school’s size or location - have access to high-quality, experiential STEM learning. The bus will be outfitted with a diverse array of professional-grade tools, including robotics and coding kits, 3D printers, virtual reality headsets, flight simulation controls, and hydroponic LED tower systems.

By delivering this mobile high-tech ecosystem directly to schools, the Baker County Education Foundation aims to close an eight-point achievement gap in science proficiency and inspire students to pursue high-demand, high-wage STEM careers. Beyond student engagement, the mobile lab will serve as a professional development hub where teachers can receive on-site coaching and model lessons. The foundation anticipates the project will benefit approximately 4,760 students over the next several years, redefining how and where STEM learning occurs in Baker County.

The Baker County Education Foundation and the Baker County School District extend their sincere appreciation to Florida Power & Light Company and the NextEra Energy Foundation for this generous $50,000 STEM Classroom Makeover Grant. This investment provides an extraordinary opportunity to deliver an innovative, high-impact STEM resource directly to our schools, expanding access to advanced learning experiences for students across the Baker County School District. We are deeply grateful for FPL’s commitment to education and for helping fuel the future of STEM learning in our community.

The Consortium of Florida Education Foundations and Baker County Education Foundation Are Working Together to Fuel Student Success

CFEF Logo

Twenty-three classroom mini-grants, along with a secondary educational program initiative, have been funded through the generous support of the Consortium of Florida Education Foundations (CFEF) and the Baker County Education Foundation. Collectively, more than $37,000 has been awarded to empower educators across the district to implement innovative instructional initiatives. These meaningful educational opportunities would not be possible without the continued partnership and financial support of CFEF.

The two infographics below highlight how these funds are being utilized by the dedicated and innovative educators of Baker County. The Baker County Education Foundation extends its sincere appreciation to the many staff members and individual donors whose generosity makes these efforts possible.

Classroom Mini-Grants Information

The Baker County Education Foundation’s 2025 Education Enhancement Mini Grants support innovative instruction in literacy, STEM, CTE, and student resiliency. Impacting 1,100 students and 30 teachers, the program utilizes a $23,412.92 budget for supplies and technology. Key goals include accelerating third-grade reading and expanding career awareness. Implementation begins October 2025, concluding by June 2026. Visuals depict students in hands-on learning and educators using instructional technology to boost achievement. These grants provide critical resources to inspire students and close achievement gaps.

Destination Graduation Grant Information

Destination Graduation is a 2025–2026 initiative by the Baker County Education Foundation to improve graduation rates, which currently trail Florida’s average. Targeting 300 at-risk or over-age students, the project implements the Edmentum Courseware platform for credit recovery and remediation. Visuals illustrate students utilizing this technology in classroom labs. Specific benchmarks include an 85% senior graduation rate and 95% success in credit attainment and middle school promotion. Funded by a $14,471 grant, the program provides a data-driven, sustainable model to ensure marginalized students successfully graduate with their peer cohorts. This project serves as a digital bridge, allowing students who have fallen behind to cross over academic gaps and reach their graduation ceremony on time.

The main goal of the Baker County Education Foundation is to promote quality education. Through the years, a number of organizations, business partners, individual donors and families have participated in helping the Foundation achieve these goals. The Foundation is very proud of the accomplishments it has achieved through their support and financial contributions.

If you are a contributor, we hope that you will continue your support of the Foundation. If you are not involved, please consider becoming a member this year. You will be supporting the development of our greatest assets, our children. Also, the Foundation benefits from the purchase of specialty education vehicle tags. A portion of the tag sale is returned to the Foundation.

Again, we thank all of our supporters of the Baker County Education Foundation.  We contribute our success to the commitment that each of you have given to our organization. Our employees have made us what we are today!
